Climate change is one of the greatest threatens that the Earth is facing nowadays. This aspect not only influences the temperatures,  but also the life and habits of all species. Here you have to work on some aspects related to endangered species.

1. Watch the following video from the ‘Polar Bears S.O.S. Organization’ and answer the following questions:

a. Where do the polar bears live?

b. What is happening to polar bears’ habitat?

c. What has happened with adult and baby polar bears because ofthe melting of  ice?

d. What may happen with polar bears when the child will be 45 years old?

e. Having watched this video, do you consider polar bears as one of the endangered species of the Earth nowadays? Why? Why not?

2. Look at the following endangered species in Spain. They are classify acording to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) (click here to learn more about it and here to see the Threatened Species Status). Then, write down a brief composition about the reasons for the extinction of these species. You will find below some hints.

Possible reasons for species extinction:

* Damages  to farming and cattle raising.

* City development.

* Poaching (illegal hunting).

* Fur coats.

* Pollution.

* Lack of foof.

* Tree devastation.

El caprichoso azar:»Brooklyn Follies», Paul Auster

El caprichoso azar juega con nosotros como si fueramos marionetas y nos lleva por caminos desconocidos para llegar a aquello que creímos perder. Quizás muchos no lo interpreten así pero la novela de Paul Auster «Brooklyn Follies» puede ser un ejemplo de ello, al menos para mí.

Las cosas siempre pasan por algo, para bien o para mal, pero creo que es así. De este modo Nathan (uno de los protagonistas de esta genial novela) va descubriendo, o mejor dicho, re-descubriendo aquello que tuvo y creyó perder. Unos no tienen la suerte de volver a ‘enmendar’ sus vidas, pero Nathan sí la tiene. Llegando al otoño de su vida encuentra aquello que anhelaba y no creía poder alcanzar. Pero así es el azar, caprichoso, y nos pone a todos en nuestro lugar, el que merecemos (bueno o malo eso depende de cada uno).

«Brooklyn Folies» es una novela de despedidas y reencuentros en el sentido más amplio que ello implica. Todo ello aderezado por el entorno ‘campechano’ de Brooklyn y sus gentes. Sueños frustrados, finales felices, finales no tan felices, vuelta a la realidad, la vida llana de los mortales, las peripecias de aquellos que no piensan en las consecuencias de sus actos, la amistad, la traición, el amor en todas sus vertientes,etc., son algunos de los temas que podemos ver en la novela; y no sólo ver sino también saborear.

Una lectura más que recomendable para aquellos que disfruten del valor de las pequeñas cosas.
